Gadis Tangsi

This is the first novel in the *Gadis Tangsi* trilogy by Suprapto Brata. It tells the story of a girl named Teyi, providing a glimpse into the life of a KNIL soldier’s family in colonial Java. Teyi embodies a young woman attempting to rebel against the constraints and values of life in the barracks, including the relaxed attitudes towards life and sexuality. Will Teyi succeed in her struggle, even after being influenced by the noble teachings of the Javanese court? With a straightforward narrative style, the author unfolds her story.

*Gadis Tangsi* can be considered one of the few Indonesian novels that reveals another perspective on life in the barracks during the Dutch colonial era.
