Madilog: Materialisme, Dialektika, dan Logika
During the Japanese-Chinese War, specifically in Shanghai at the end of 1931, I was trapped for three days behind a street called North Sichuan Road, where the fighting first erupted. From North Sichuan Road, the Japanese fired toward Po Shan Road, and Chinese soldiers fired back from the opposite direction. Among the conflict, precisely in the village of Wang Pan Cho, I was stuck with my library. After two or three days, the Japanese soldiers finally allowed the residents of my village to relocate to a safer place within just five minutes. I hurriedly moved as well. Naturally, after the war—about a month later—not a single piece of paper remained. That’s how neatly “Laliong,” the pickpocket, worked. But this did not make me lose hope. As long as bookstores exist, libraries can be rebuilt. If necessary—and it was indeed necessary—I was even willing to reduce my clothing and food!
