The story follows eleven-year-old Pecola Breedlove, a Black girl who prays for her eyes to turn blue, believing that doing so will make her as beautiful and adored as the blonde, blue-eyed children she sees around her. Set in the fall of 1941, the year the marigolds in the Breedloves' garden fail to bloom, Pecola's life takes a tragic and heartbreaking turn.
