Perantau
In a village in Indonesia, it is customary for an adult man to go out into the world. "Go and seek your fortune, my son," is a common phrase spoken by mothers in that area. But what does it truly mean to venture out? In the short story "Perantau," Gus tf Sakai beautifully explores the meaning and hopes that wanderers seek.
In several other stories, Gus tf Sakai offers social critiques through a carefully structured, metaphorical narrative style. For example, the story "Tujuh Puluh Tujuh Lidah Emas" critiques the central government for exploiting local natural resources. "Belatung" tells the story of an economic struggle that drives a woman into prostitution. Meanwhile, "Kami Lepas Anak Kami" addresses issues with an imbalanced education curriculum.
The stories in this collection have been published in prominent media outlets such as Kompas, Koran Tempo, Media Indonesia, Horison, and Padang Ekspress. "Perantau" is Gus tf Sakai's fourth collection of short stories, following "Istana Ketirisan" (1996), "Kemilau Cahaya dan Perempuan Buta" (1999), and "Laba-laba" (2003). "Kemilau Cahaya dan Perempuan Buta" won the Lontar Literary Award in 2001 and the Language Center Literary Award in 2002, and was translated into English by The Lontar Foundation under the title "The Barber" (2002). It also received the SEA Write Award in 2004.
