Parang tak Berulu
By focusing on small units such as village traditions or household life, Raudal Tanjung Banua employs an effective narrative strategy to tackle larger realities. Small elements like knives or machetes serve as hidden focal points in his storytelling; their consistent portrayal allows them to symbolize male identity or the shadow of masculinity, provoking underlying conflicts. Without resorting to overt symbolism or realism, many of Raudal's finest stories form a cohesive "system" while also acting as a prism reflecting broader issues of gender, community, or social units. Without the pretentiousness of diluting local colors, Raudal successfully translates the complexity (and fractures) of oral traditions into written form, enriching literature.
