Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk
This trilogy of **Dukuh Paruk**—comprising *Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk*, *Lintang Kemukus Dini Hari*, and *Jantera Bianglala*—explores the vibrant spirit of Dukuh Paruk as it revitalizes with the coronation of Srintil as the new ronggeng, replacing the last one who died twelve years prior. In this small, impoverished, and humble village, the ronggeng symbolizes their identity, and without her, they feel a profound loss of self.
Srintil quickly becomes a celebrated figure, admired for her beauty and charm. Everyone, from common folk to village and district officials, desires to be with her.
However, the political disaster of 1965 devastates the village both physically and mentally. In their ignorance, the villagers are swept away by the tide and are labeled as individuals who have shaken the nation. The village is burned down, and the ronggeng along with her musicians are imprisoned. Fortunately, due to her beauty, Srintil is spared harsh treatment from the prison authorities.
Yet, her bitter experience as a political prisoner awakens her awareness of her dignity as a human being. Upon her release, she is determined to rebuild her self-image. She no longer wishes to serve any man; she aspires to become a respected woman. When Bajus enters her life, a flicker of hope ignites within her, growing ever larger with time.
